dom perignon and grilled octopus

Athens is great. It's European and Mediterranean and the food is fabulous. The only drawback is I'm back in the land of American tourists. I'm trying to keep a low profile, but Fred isn't exactly a quiet talker. Oh well.

We kicked off our first night with my very first bottle of Dom Perignon. Our little Freddy, emboldened with his two newly minted degrees (master's and medical), splurged on a bottle at Detroit duty free. After making fun of him for it, I was happy he did. So long Moet -- hello a life of expensive bubbly. Man was it good!

We topped it off by walking around the Plaka, sampling the coffee, stumbling upon the Acropolis at night, which glowed golden over the city. Finally we decided sleeping on a stomach filled only with champagne and coffee was probably not a good idea and stopped at a taverna in the plaka. Dinner consisted of some pink fishy thing (more delicious than it sounds), salad and the fabulous grilled octopus, to which we are now hopelessly addicted.

We woke up today to the awesome buffet breakfast downstairs, then headed out for a day of climbing around the Acropolis. Unfortunately about 75 percent of it is under construction, so we viewed most of it through the scaffolding. What we saw, though, was awesome. Some more walking and we saw the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier then stopped off to buy tickets to a classical concert at the Acropolis tomorrow night. Tonight, we're going to a Cuban restaurant with live music. We found it while walking back to the hotel this afternoon and heard the strains of the Buena Vista Social Club seeping out.

Oh yeah, Greece is awesome.
