another terrible day on vacation

Yes, I'm blatantly stealing that line from Joe-Heath-Hilary, but frankly it's just terrible sitting on a beach in an island paradise. Utterly terrible to wake up with a clean sea breeze and clean blue water just outside your window.

Um yeah, I love the Greek islands.

We got to Naxos this morning after two days in Mykonos, the prototypical party island. However, in prototypical old-lady/old-man style, Fred and I fell asleep at 9 the first night as a result of our last sleepless night in Athens, followed by a 7:30 a.m. ferry to Mykonos. Ugh. Dr. Bastard managed to sleep nearly the entire way on the ferry, while I fidgeted uncomfortably for six hours. Not that the ferry is uncomfortable -- on the contrary -- I was just restless. And if you saw where we ended up you'd understand why.

The islands are exactly what you'd expect: Clean blue waters, sparkling white buildings with blue doors and roofs. It's awesome. Leaving is going to be hard.

We spent the first afternoon at Paradise beach, what I'd expect MTV Spring Break looks like up close. It was awful. After two hours of head-thumping music, we crashed without even eating dinner. The next morning, we met a group of newly minted University of California graduates at our beloved Mama's Pension. They're from Berkeley, so we'll forgive them that. But they were still cool enough that we spent the day hitting up beaches and restaurants and bars, only to get back at the pension at 11:30 in the night to get ready for a night out that started at 2 a.m. and ended about 4. That's how they roll in Mykonos.

As if the California connections weren't small enough, we met a pair of Davis grads at our first pub stop. Go Ags!

After rustling Fred the bear from bed at 9, we caught our 10 a.m. highspeed ferry to Naxos and have been lazing at the Alkyoni Hotel ever since. There's lots of historical significance and plenty of activities here. I'm just not sure we'll be able to pull ourselves off the beach to get to any of them before we leave on the 12th for Santorini. We shall see...

Have you met any Greek shipping heirs? In LA, apparently, they're a dime a dozen.
