How is it that someone can work as a professional writer for five years (nine, if you count the four years at The Aggie, which I do. Even if I was paid crap.) and still go crazy at the thought of writing anything longer than five pages?
How? HOW?
Ugh.
End rant.

it's cos you wrote the news.... some how academic writing is so overwhelming once you train your brain to simplify and get the the bleeping point. ahhh..... aggie love, how you scar me today!?!
My sophmore year of college, when I was considering a journalism major instead of English, I spoke to the editor of my school's newspaper. In a nutshell he said news writing was fine and dandy, but that it would screw up all other types of writing for the rest of my life. I nodded politely. A decade later as it takes me an hour and a half to write a paragraph for an academic paper, I realize he was right.
But if Sharfman and Visner want a 300 word news story about Gilman Louie, you and I will be able to bust it out in nothing flat! :)
AND - you won't be getting paid by the word for the five page missive either.
Kind of takes the fun out of it.
